One of our wonderful tutors was looking for a good site for her learner and came across this one.

http://www.metrosouth.org/reading/Metro_South_Reading_Lab/Metro_South_Reading_Lab.html

What a great place to go. All the writings and stories are in different levels and nice and simple. Just take a look and see what you think.

There are:

good topics
definitions of vocabulary
a good photo for context
and good guided questions.

Welcome Back

Welcome to all of our wonderful tutors.
We are looking forward to another exciting year.

I have been trying to bring the tutoring list up to date. So if you are receiving this it should mean that you still want to be a tutor.

If you are done with your tutoring time (boo hoo) and you want to be taken off the database, please let me know.

I am sure I will be calling on some of you very soon. The learners are now on a waiting list. The biggest challenge, right now if finding people who will tutor computer skills. If you are comfortable on your computer, can make documents, search the internet, use Facebook (if you want to), or think you have some skills to share please let me know.

We get a lot of seniors looking for help with tutoring.

Anyhow, fall seems to be here, so let's get started.
So good to know you are all out there helping in the community. We are very lucky here in Powell River.

What's Happening at the Learning Centre?

Hello Tutors
Just a note to say the centre will be closed next Monday for Victoria Day.

Wednesday May 21 is an In and Out in One Hour session here at the Learning Centre. Noon until 1 pm. explore how your learners can use Graphic Novels.
Please remember that I do not work in July and August, but the centre is open most of that time.

You and your learner can take a whole summer break, come in regularly or just time to time. I will let you know if we are planning a short closure at all. Keep in mind we are closed all Statutory holidays.

We have had a wonderful year. Tutors have spent hours with learners doing reading, writing, math and computers. You have all made a big difference in people's lives and in our community. Well done everyone.

Digital Storytelling - An Exciting Opportunity for Tutors

Hello Tutors

It was great to see so many of you at the Tutor Thank You Lunch. I hope you enjoyed it.

Anyhow, something new coming up. We applied for and got a New Horizons Grant for Seniors. We are going to be teaching digital storytelling to seniors.

Never heard of it? Well here is how it works. We are going to do this three time in the year before the end of next March.

Seniors sign up with us to create a digital story. That is a short little story that goes on the computer. It has a storyline and is read by the senior and accompanied by images and music. These are great little memoirs.  Here is an example of one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEoTKxr9EyY

The first opportunity to volunteer in this program starts in May. We want tutors who are comfortable with the computer. The job is to sit beside the senior as he or she works on their digital story and help them with basic computer skills.

May 10 we have a general introduction for everyone learners and tutors.

Then in May the seniors go off and learn how to write a script for their memoirs.

Then we need the volunteers back in June, June 7, 14, 21 and 28 Saturday mornings to help the seniors. In each of these sessions we will have a teacher to teach the whole group and we need a computer tutor for each learner. You would be in more of a supporting role with the learner.

If you want to know more about this opportunity please contact me at call@prepsociety.org

It will be a fun and exciting project and you will learn about how to make digital stories (something you might choose to do for yourself in the future)

Thanks

Upcoming Training Opportunities for Tutors

Hello Tutors

We have a bunch of new tutors this year and we still have many of our old favourites doing good work out there.

We are trying to build a "community of tutors" and so offer a shorter basic training now and more follow up opportunities.

Please think about sparing a couple of hours (or sometimes just an hour) to get together with other tutors to pick up a new skill to add to your skill bag.

Here is what is coming up:

April 16th - In and Out in One Hour at the Learning Centre above the Bank of Montreal on Marine Ave. noon to 1 pm. Topic: Never Fail Writing Method.

April 24th - Behind the Scenes at the Public Library. Learn how the library can become your learner's best friend. Library 6:30 pm.

May 21 - In and Out in One Hour at the Learning Centre above the Bank of Montreal on Marine Ave. noon to 1 pm. Topic : Using Graphic Novels in Reading and Writing Tutoring.

Please do come to some or all of these. Please RSVP to call@prepsociety.org if you can come. Hope to see you there.

Some Great Writing Activities

Some very good writing activities can be found at this site.

We have the set of books in the reading section of the learning centre, right near the entrance door. What you probably didn't know was just how fabulous the extension activities can be.

http://www.grassrootsbooks.net/pdf/Active_Reader_5_Activities.pdf

For example, this lesson is about the activist Jane Goodall. Here are some ideas:

Free-writing: A Personal Passion
Many people have a passion for something as children. Some
people are able to follow that passion into adulthood. Others
lose the passion along the way. Begin with a discussion of Jane
Goodall’s passion for animals. Then provide the student with a
copy of the questions below. Give the student ample time to read
and think about the questions and explore the topic, a personal
passion.

The student does not have to verbalize their thoughts.
Encourage the student to begin free-writing for five minutes on the
topic at any time as they think about their personal passion.

After
five minutes of free-writing, have the student stop writing and take
a 5- or 10-minute break. Then have the student read over their
free-writing. Encourage the student to isolate one or two favourite
ideas they have put down, and free-write again for five minutes to
expand on these ideas.

Did you ever experience a similar passion as a child, or as an adult?
Do you have the same or a similar passion now?
Did you grow out of it? Or can you see traces of it in the adult you have become?
If the passion has fallen by the wayside, why did it fall by the wayside? Would it
be possible to breathe life back into your passion in the future?
