January 13, Tell Your Friends

Linda and I will be doing a new Tutor Training Course starting January 13 of next year. We would love to have a group as wonderful as you all were. So if you were that great, maybe your friends and colleagues are just as great.

Please tell anyone you think would be interested to get in the game.
They can contact me at call@prepsociety.org or phone me at 604 413-1021 to find out more about the course.

And tell them you had fun (if you indeed did).

Thanks Tutors of Powell River

January 13 new tutors' course

Hello all.
We didn't quite get the numbers we needed this fall to run a Volunteer Adult Tutor Training Course, so we have postponed it until January. Please let anyone who is interested know and they can always contact me at
604 413-1021.

Thanks Deb

Library Bash

We had a good time at Powell River Public Library tonight. JoMichelle Seidl, the Assistant Chief Librarian, was kind enough to show us all the literacy materials and get us on to some new resources.

It was nice for all the tutors to compare notes and we even had a nice cup of coffee and some cake.

Thanks JoMichelle for all the support.

London King's Cross railway station

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Train pulling up to the platform.

King's Cross station is an important railway station in London.

[change]History

London King's Cross railway station first opened in 1852.[1] Plans to make the station were made as early as 1848 by George Turnbull. A detailed design was made by Lewis Cubitt.

[change]Location

The station is located on the edge of Central London, were the A501 Euston Road and York Way cross. It is stationed in the Kings Cross district and within the London Borough of Camden on the border of the London Borough of Islington.[2]

King's Cross forms the southern terminus of the East Coast Main Line, one of the UK's major railway stations. Immediately to the west is St Pancras station, the terminus for international Eurostar trains, and the two stations share King's Cross St. Pancras tube station on the London Underground network.

Math Word Problems

Here is a great site for learning how to work out math word problems.

http://www.kidzone.ws/math/wp/t_math.asp?xmaswp4.asp

It is arranged by grade and by theme and has lots of ideas.

Will post more soon.

here is another site that teaches you strategies for solving word problems.

one more site that helps you break down the problem into strategies and steps.

This site uses sort of 2D thinking blocks to work out math problems. Simple and interesting. Try it.

Storytime

http://www.storycorps.net/listen

Here is a great story site for any of you storytellers. Many of the stories are like memoirs or remininscences.
I am not sure how we could use this, but it could be a great tool to actually help a learner submit a story.

Cheers Deb

Fabulous Math

This is the link for Kate Nonesuch's really excellent book on teaching math.
It is huge, so you probably don't want to make a copy of the whole thing.
But download the PDF copy and then you can go through it at your leisure.
