How to Use the Newspaper

June 12 at the Learning Centre above the Bank of Montreal on Marine

Noon to 1 pm.

In this In and Out 1 hour session we will explore how to help your learner with his or her reading and writing by using the newspaper as your main resource. By using the Peak, our community newspaper we can explore some activities that you can play with.

Explore reading and writing strategies that are relevant and fun for the learners.

Some ideas:

  • Developing a Point of View
  • Brainstorming Ideas
  • Making a Timeline
  • Using the 5 W's
  • Predicting

As usual I will bring the cookies and tea and it is a great opportunity to meet other tutors. Please do RSVP to tell me that you are coming.

This will be the last In and Out session for the year until we start up again in September.

Thanks
Deb
Now here is some fun. Go to this file and make a word cloud with your learner. It creates something lovely and artistic. Try it.

Social Networking, Internet Safety and More, Oh My

Lots of great resources here. I particularly liked some of the ideas under Internet Safety. This is always a concern for people who are just learning about computers.

Take a look.

Acne and Other Complaints

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/tutorial.html

At this interesting site, there are all kinds of diseases explained in simple language. Check out a few of them.  You turn your speakers on and the tutorials speak while you read along.

I checked out ACNE, what do you want to try. Perfect for learners interested in health.

Tutor's Night at the Public Library - Save the Date

We like to have a behind the scenes event at the Public Library for all our tutors. You get to meet the Assistant Chief Librarian, JoMichelle Seidl as she shows us all kinds of resources you can use with your learners.

She will show you where the special collection is for new readers and will discuss how you can encourage your learner to come to library, or, indeed come back.

I will provide tea and cakes.

If you were in an earlier training and missed this event, please sign up now. If you were in any of the tutor trainings in 2012 or 2013 this is one of your follow up events. Do please come if you can.

When - May 23rd
Where - Public Library
What time - 6:30

Please RSVP to me at call@prepsociety.org

Thanks so much tutors and looking forward to seeing you.
